Birdwatching

The sheer variety of habitats across the Alentejo ensures a constant spectacle for bird lovers. Popular ornithological destinations include the protected Castro Verde, home to the great bustard, Europe’s largest flying bird. Large numbers of raptors (including the huge black vulture) patrol the vast open landscape which is smothered in wildflowers in spring. To the east the Vale do Guadiana Natural Park around Mértola is hot and dry, providing refuge for rare golden eagles and eagle owls.
On the Sado estuary it’s possible to see over 250 species all year round. And the lagoons of Santo André e da Sancha are highly regarded reserves, with stunning birdlife amid spectacular wetland surroundings. Find birdwatching
